The Lancaster City Police Foundation is a charitable nonprofit corporation that has been recognized by the IRS and registered with the Pennsylvania State Bureau of Charitable Organizations.  The Foundation helps implement elements of the Lancaster Crime Commission recommendations to support our police department. 

The Foundation includes a former City police officer and current business manager at Armstrong, insurance and finance executives, an ex-EMT and firefighter who is now an attorney, a security professional, a health care professional and a Franklin & Marshall professor.

The group credits its formation to Chris McMurtrie for his efforts on behalf of the Foundation as well as other civic organizations pursuing safety initiatives, as well as Armstrong Chairman Mike Lockhart, who puts his time and personal financial support behind the organization.  We also owe a debt of gratitude to the law firm Barley Snyder in helping to get the Foundation organized.

The Foundation has big plans.  Its objective is to promote a safe environment and neighborhoods for the residents, workers and visitors of Lancaster.  It focuses on enhancing the services of the Lancaster City Police Department and working with the Police to:

• Promote civic spirit in support of public safety and security,
• Enhance public awareness of safety issues,
• Provide equipment to make Police work safer and more effective, and
• Educate the public about safety issues.

 

The Foundation is patterned on foundations that have been formed in other communities, notably New York City.  The close and active public-police partnership there has assisted the police force in improving public safety and security.  By promoting civic interaction with the police and helping to supplement governmental resources, public participants better understand the work of the police and become “invested” in public safety.  We want to build bridges with all sectors of the community, and urge them to become invested in the work of our Police.
