In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week.

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated in 1991 by President George H.W. Bush.It honors all of America's federal, state and local law enforcers. Inscribed on the Memorial's blue-gray marble walls are the names of more than 17,500 officers who have been killed in the line of duty, dating back to the first known death in 1792.

On May 15, 2008, Chief Keith Sadler, Captain Pete Anders, Captain Brian Wiczkowski and several officers traveled to Washington, D.C. on a bus trip sponsored by the Police Association. The officers paid their respects to Lancaster Police Lieutenant Elwood Gainor. Lieutenant Gainor died in the line of duty on March 28, 1927. He was beaten and shot to death after being abducted, while in uniform, from Lancaster. His body was found on Hook Road in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the following day. His skull had been crushed and he had been shot in the head four times. It is believed that he was abducted and murdered by bootleggers who were operating in Lancaster.
