Life in a city like Lancaster has many rewards. There is quick, easy access to shops, businesses, health care, churches, recreational facilities and cultural attractions. There is the oppurtunity for a rich social life with family and friends within walking distance. However, living in a densely populated area has some problems and challenges. Respecting one another as people and respecting one another’s property will go along way toward improving the quality of life for everyone. We share our public spaces and all of us are responsible for keeping these areas clean, safe, and orderly. Courtesy and respect for the rights of others are not optional. To enjoy the many benfits of city life, it is essential that we all work together. With the arrival of Spring and warmer weather approaching, the Lancaster Bureau of Police will striclty enforce state law and local ordinances for violations that affect the quality of life in our community. Through community surveys , we have learned that residents are very concerned about noisy cars, litter, vandalism, and disorderly youth. Since serious crime continues to decline in the city, the Police Bureau has placed a greater emphasis on enforcement of City ordinance violations that negatively impact the quality of life for residents and visitors. The Bureau of Police will continue with a low tolerance approach by being proactive with enforcement. Another Quality of Life issue that has grown over the past year is the use of BB and pellet guns in the city. Well over 100 incidents were reported where BB and pellet guns were used to damage property or injure someone. There is a City Ordinance that prohibits the discharge of guns, including BB and pellet guns. Possessing a realistic looking BB gun is discouraged since other people, including police officers, have a difficult time distinquishing BB guns from more powerful handguns. The following statistics reflect prosecutions filed in 2004.
