FREE VEHICLE VIN etching OFFERED IN LANCASTER

Etching your vehicle identification number on all the auto glass makes it less likely to be stolen.

The Lancaster City Police will sponsor a free VINetching event on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The event is open to the public and will be held at Park City Center, 550 Plaza Blvd., in the parking lot between Tires Plus and Sears Auto. Weather permitting (there is no rain date), vehicles will be etched on a first-come, first-served basis. The process takes less than 15 minutes.

VINetching or VINgraving is a proven theft deterrent. The Vehicle’s Identification Number (VIN) is chemically etched on to the vehicle’s windshield and all windows.  (The process does not damage the glass.) Would-be thieves resist stealing a vehicle that is VINetched because that vehicle is more easily identified and, if stolen, all of the costly glass must be replaced in order to remove traces of the VIN.

Det. Sgt. Gary Mackley, supervisor of the Property Crimes Unit with the Lancaster Bureau of Police, urges residents of Lancaster and the surrounding area to have their vehicles VINetched. “Take advantage of two free and easy ways to protect your car,” Mackley says.  “First of all, lock it. Most stolen cars were left unlocked or with the keys inside. Second, get your car VINetched. Both common sense tactics will likely cause thieves to bypass your car for an easier target.”

VINetching at a dealership often costs several hundred dollars.
