10.04.12 Burglary Arrest

4 October 2012 by Lt. Todd Umstead

On Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012, at 10:33 a.m. a citizen noticed a man in the back yard of a residence in the 600 block of Poplar St. This man was seen peering into several windows of the residence. The man then knelt down by the kitchen door at the rear of the house and removed an item from a back pack he was carrying. This individual also pulled a t-shirt out of the back pack and placed it over his face and nose. The man then began to pry at the window screen of the kitchen door, eventually gaining access to the home. The witness notified police and told a neighbor what was happening. The neighbor yelled at the man, who fled on foot, running east on Poplar St.  Arriving officers from C platoon were able to box the suspect in and capture him on nearby New Dorwart St. The suspect was found to have scissors, a pair of gloves, and the previously mentioned t-shirt and back pack in his possession. He was arrested and conveyed to the police station. Follow-up investigation and interviews resulted in the suspect being charged with one count of Burglary and one count of Possessing Instruments of Crime by Det. Toby Hickey before MDJ Janice Jimenez. It was also discovered that the residents of the burglarized home were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom at the time of this incident.

The suspect was identified as:

Christopher Lee GILLESPIE 22-year-old male

600 blk. Poplar St. Lancaster, PA

He was committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $150,000.00 bail. This investigation is continuing and detectives anticipate additional burglary charges will be filed against GILLESPIE.
