10.16.12 Warrant Detail

17 October 2012 by Sgt. Kevin Fry

On the evening of October 16, 2012 the Lancaster City Bureau of Police Selective Enforcement Unit (SEU) and Pennsylvania State Parole conducted a Warrant Sweep Operation within the City of Lancaster, PA.

In May 2012, as part of the Lancaster Violent Crime Reduction Initiative, the Lancaster City Bureau of Police began drug enforcement operations in the southwest section of Lancaster City. City Police chose a section of the southwest as the “target area” for these efforts based on violent crime and drug crime statistics. Undercover officers from the Lancaster City Bureau of Police Selective Enforcement Unit (SEU) made controlled purchases of illegal drugs from numerous individuals in the target area, over the course of the next three or four months. This effort culminated in numerous buys of various illegal drugs from 29 different drug dealers, who had been operating in and around the target area. Several individuals were arrested and charged immediately with their offenses. The arrest of others was deferred to a later time, while the Lancaster Violent Crime Reduction Initiative committee reviewed information about the offenders.

Three individuals were chosen to be offered a chance to avoid criminal arrest for their drug dealing and were invited to the Lancaster City Police station for the “call-in” on Oct. 2, 2012. One of the offenders, Maria Maldonado, failed to appear at the call-in and a warrant was subsequently issued for her arrest.

On the evening of Oct. 16, 2012 police, with a Felony Warrant in hand, arrested Maria Maldonado at her home on the 500 block of St. Joseph St.  The warrant was the result of Maldonado’s participation in selling illegal narcotics (cocaine) to an undercover police officer during the initial phase of the Lancaster Violent Crime Reduction Initiative.

The other two individuals who attended the call-in agreed to the agreement presented to them and are currently enrolled in programs offered through the initiative. While several arrests have been made as a result of this effort, warrants have been issued for additional drug dealers who became targets of this investigation. The arrests of those subjects are on-going.

The message from this initiative should be clear. Drug dealing and violence will not be accepted and the Lancaster Violent Crime Reduction Initiative strives to make Lancaster a safer place to live and work.

In addition to Maldonado, four others were arrested during the warrant sweep on 16 OCT 2012.  Two of these subjects also sold illegal narcotics to undercover officers during the initial phase of the Lancaster Violent Crime Reduction Initiative.
