12.21.2012 McCaskey East HS Text incident

21 December 2012 by Sgt. Bill Hickey

On Friday December 21, 2012 School Resource Officers (SROs) assigned to the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) received information from school officials at Lampeter-Strasburg School District. A student at LSHS received a text message from a student at JP McCaskey East High School, earlier on December 21, 2012.

The McCaskey East student sent a text that they had been the victim of a shooting inside the school. The student at LSHS attempted to verify if the text was real or a prank. The McCaskey student indicated that it was not a joke. The LSHS student contacted staff at LSHS. Staff at McCaskey East was notified of the incident as well as the identity of the McCaskey East student. West Lampeter Twp. Police was notified of the incident. They were not called to respond to LSHS in response to the text. Chief Walsh, West Lampeter Twp. Police, was able to verify that Lancaster City Police were not investigating a shooting incident at the McCaskey HS campus.

The McCaskey student met with school staff and SRO David Shell. The juvenile admitted to sending the text as a joke. No one at either school or the Lancaster City Police found anything remotely humorous about the incident.

After consultation with the District Attorney’s Office, a charge of Disorderly Conduct is going to be filed against the student from McCaskey East.  The offense will be graded as a Misdemeanor of the 3rd degree. The juvenile allegation will be filed before Lancaster County Juvenile Probation.
