6.06.12 Long's Park Shooting

26 June 2012 by Lt. Umstead

Shortly after 4:00 pm, Wednesday, June 6th Officers of the Lancaster Bureau of Police were dispatched to Long’s Park for a report of a 15 year old being shot in the arm and it was relayed that the victim was being conveyed to the hospital in a private vehicle. Officers went to both Long’s Park and the hospital, where the victim, a 15 year old Lancaster Twp teenager was being treated for a gunshot wound to the area of his right wrist/lower part of his arm.

Detectives responded to the hospital and the scene and several witnesses, as well as the suspect, were conveyed to the police station where they were subsequently interviewed.  It was determined that the 15 year old had been at the park for a family function, during which time he had a super-soaker type of squirt gun and had been squirting it.  During this time, the below suspect, who was a relative also at the function, fired a shot at the victim, striking him in the area of the right wrist.  The suspect was identified as….

                   James Lawoyne Thedford Sr., 35

                   Jennings Drive

                   Lancaster Township

Detectives also processed the scene and the gun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered from the vehicle which was used to convey the victim to the hospital.  It was also determined that that Thedford had a permit to carry a concealed firearm.  The victim was treated for his injury and later released from the hospital.

As a result of the investigation, Detective James Fatta is charging the suspect with Aggravated Assault(F-1) and 3 Counts of Recklessly Endangering Another Person(M-2) before Magisterial District Judge Mary Mongiovi-Sponaugle and he is being held for arraignment.

As always, anyone charged with a crime is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
