7.03.12 Stabbing, Attempted Robbery

     At 11:18 p.m. July 2, 2012, LCPD officers responded to a stabbing / robbery that had just occurred in the area of N. Market St. and W. James St. Officers located several victims and witnesses and learned that at least two suspects had approached three male victims in the 1st block of W. James St. The suspects attempted to steal bottles of beer from the victims. One of the suspects stabbed a 26-year-old male city resident in the torso during this attempted robbery. The victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries requiring surgery. His injuries were not immediately believed to be life-threatening.  Additionally, a 20-year-old male city resident was struck in the head with a handgun during this incident. This victim did not require medical treatment. The suspects fled the scene on foot.

    Lancaster Community Safety Coalition staff assisted responding officers in locating the possible robbery suspects. Using information provided by the Safety Coalition camera operators, officers quickly located and stopped two subjects in the 400 block of N. Queen St. Witnesses identified one of these subjects as the person who stabbed the 26-year-old male. This subject, later identified as Eric Smith, also dropped a BB/pellet gun that resembled a semi-automatic firearm on the ground when approached by police officers. Smith was found to have a knife and a small amount of marijuana in his possession. Smith was transported to the police station.      

     Police continue to investigate this incident. At this time, no charges have been filed against the second individual who was stopped. It is also believed that a third individual, who was not located, may have been involved in this incident.      The below subject was charged with Robbery, Criminal Conspiracy (to commit robbery), Aggravated Assault, Criminal Conspiracy (to commit aggravated assault) and Possession of a Small Amount of Marijuana by Det. James Fatta before MDJ Bruce Roth:

   Eric SMITH 44-year-old male

   Former resident of Maryland

 Smith was arraigned and committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $500,000.00 bail.
