On Monday August 26, 2013 at approximately 2:16 pm, Officers from the Lancaster City Police Department “C” Platoon attempted to stop a Wanted Person driving a vehicle. The attempt to stop the driver initiated along the 800 blk. E. King St. The driver failed to yield to uniformed Officers in marked vehicles after they activated the emergency lights and sirens on their vehicles. The driver fled east on King St. and then south on S. Broad St. The driver continued his flight from Officers as he drove along S. Broad St. As the driver passed the intersection of S. Broad St. and Almanac Ave., he lost control of the vehicle. The suspect vehicle drove cross the northbound lane of the 500 blk. Chesapeake St. and crashed into a PPL utility pole at the intersection of S. Franklin St. and Chesapeake St.(S. Broad St. becomes Chesapeake St. after you pass Almanac Ave.) The pole sheared off at the base and wires that had been suspended were on the ground.
Due to the dangerous nature of the situation the driver was ordered out of the vehicle under what are known as high risk/felony circumstances. As a precaution, students from Washington Elementary School and Hand Middle School were kept from dismissal until the driver was in custody. The driver was taken into custody and students were allowed to leave their schools. The driver was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated for potential injuries that might have been sustained during the crash. No other vehicles or people were injured as a result of the crash.
As of the time of this release, traffic is still blocked along Chesapeake St./ S. Broad St. Motorists are asked to find alternate routes until the scene is cleared.
This incident is still under investigation. The identity of the driver is not being released at this time. As the investigation continues, additional details will be released through formal Press Releases.
